Running - My New passion

Running??? I can walk, I can trek, even I can cycle.. That too long distance. But running, a distant dream... This is something I was not able to do easily. This was my state till July 2017. However I registered for prestigious Satara hill marathon, that too only 3 kms run called as fun run and it started from that day onward.
Practice started with the help of google, running apps, and of course from my running friends. Friends (Santosh Rajapure, Bhalchandra, Amit Talwalkar, Adwait) were always handy giving important tips what to avoid. Google was always there with tons of videos on how to run and improve. Well, information without analysis and execution is just a data of no use!! I started running, but was able to run hardly 500m..not more than that. One day, I found a widget in Garmin about 5k running plan. I thought to give a try to that as well. And guess what, that's like eureka!!. Simple running technique, started with 200m walk followed by 100m run for 30 mins. Slowly running distance got increased (thanks to the levels in the app, worked as motivational factor👍) and I was able to run 1k without break.

SHHM 2017
Till Satara marathon, I was comfortable running close to 2k. Satara 3k run was tough for me, but the crowd and atmosphere helped me finish it non stop. That was a moral booster for me! But then practise got stopped somehow. Next motivation came in the form of FICCI marathon, and I regustered for 5k. Somehow I was able to finish it mix of run and walk. Then there was Giripremi's mountain run for 10k organized on Int'l mountain day. As it was a mountain run, no shy of walking and I registered for it. With 50-50% of walk and run, I completed my first 10k.

Giripremi's mountain run, my first 10k 👍
Touching the 10k mark was good, but not satisfying personally as I was not able to run the complete distance. I did one more 10k at JD marathon, but with similar success. Was able to run 6k continuously, and then mix of run and walk. One thing I learned after this run was I was trying to finish in less time than finishing with continuous run aka finishing strong. Videos and friends quick tips were not giving any notch further.
After JD run
Precisely, this is the time when Anagha pointed me out to a group which meets at Pu La Deshpande garden for running. I googled for it, landed on pune running website and saw many groups in different parts of the city including the one I was looking for. Again, time to shout eureka!! Came to know this group meets every Tuesday and Thirsday at 5:30 am for strength training (and not for running). 2 days a week, hmm I can manage, but what about time? For a person like me who has never seen how it look outside before 7 (disclaimer: except trekking days) was a herculean task.

After so many ifs and buts, I joined this group on 29 March. Weather was good,
After ST with the PR South pose !!
but I started sweating in 5 mins. After initial warm up and various types of walk, it was time for 108 surya namaskar. I was able to do 5-6 sets of 12 suryanamaskar. I thought this is tough to do, I cant do it. But later I came to know its only once a month (LToM - last Thursday of month). I convinced myself, ok I can skip it!!. That day learned 2 things - this group is called as PRS (pune running south) and their (now our) standard style/pose while taking group photo!
April and May months were pretty good as far as my attendance is considered. I registered for April LSoM (Last Sunday of Month) 10k run and was first time successful to complete without a stop or walk. Thanks to Pushkaraj sir, Manoj sir and PRS team for their continuous support and motivation. I also had couple of small runs with this team.
June came with 2 reasons - first Roopkund trek followed by rains. It stopped my participation and reduced excitement too. During the Roopkund trek, Sasi told that his goal is to run 21k by this year end. I said I am good with 10k and don't want to stretch it further! Had a good 10k run while I was in Moline. After coming back, Pushkaraj (Swami) told that we have to run TMM this time. I said ok, since I missed chance to run SHHM. TMM needs qualifying run with specific timing. That's how I registered for AFMC 10k run and finished well within the required time. After discussion with Pushkaraj sir, I finally registered for 21k aka HM at TMM (awaiting confirmation as on date though).

With PRS Team

TMM is still in January 2019, long time to start the prep. In the meantime, I completed the August LSoM as well. August and September are 2 good months with quite a bit of running. Cross trainings (cycling, hiking) and strength training. Had 3 long, but comfortable runs beyond 10k and two 10k runs. All these runs were focused more on endurance and HR than timing. Garmin is really handy (since I wore it on my wrist!!) in monitoring HR. This gave me confidence that I can run 21k as well. With this mindset, I registered for 21k in Sept LSoM.
I was very much nervous before the September LSoM, and nervousness increased to a greater extent when I saw the mighty hill climb at the start point. (It was like giving a 10th standard question paper to a 1st standard student!!) The route was tough, with couple of good elevations including the loop repeat. First 10 kms pretty good, however the Upper Indira Nagar elevation just after 14 kms was too much for me to run, and I had to walk it. Again the 1 km with the elevation was impossible to run. Running alog with More sir and Bhansali sir was a pleasure. I (somehow) completed my first half marathon (HM) with 2:43 hrs of time. Considering the toughness of the route, it was surely a nice achievement.
Feeling like a superhero
My favorite post after completing first HM

With this LSoM run, I also completed 100 kms running in a month. One more big milestone achieved. 👍👍

And Medals too :)

Roopkund Trek 2018

After our successful trek of Goech la last year, we started planning for this years trek. Couple of options (including Everest base camp) were searched and discussed and then we finalized yet another trek in Himalayas and in India. This time, it was Roopkund trek in the state of Uttarakhand.

Roopkund is a moderate trek of 6 days famous for the mysterious lake with skeletons. Once again, we selected TTH as our past experience was awesome. Due to personal and official commitments, we finalized 1st week of June (8 June - 17 June) for the trek. Anagha is also joining for this trek, her being the first Himalayan trek. The group size started increasing hitting the 10 marks (to get 10% discount) very quickly and very soon we were 25+. 😀😀

Travel desk was once again active to complete all the train and rail bookings. Sinhgad practice sessions started immediately, whereas Hadapsar folks found it convenient to do Kanifnath trek. We also had a K2S night trek as part of practice. Country's economy was boosted significantly with frequent visits to Decathlon, Everest shop along with Amazon and Flipkart!
Trek 100 shoes... new shoes for me :)

This time, we had a new t shirt for this trek, in 2 colors white and dark blue.
Here is the design of the same.
Front side (same as last year)

Goech La Trek: Day 11

Day 11
Wednesday 10 May 2017
Yuksom to Siliguri

Officially last day of our trek itinerary. It would be again a long scenic journey across the mountains. Amit, Mohan, Sushma, Brahma, Sheetal and Atul left early in one car. They headed directly to Bagdogra airport to catch the flight for Delhi. Remaining 2 cars left at around 7:30. I am sure everyone was feeling nostalgic while leaving Yuksom. Hotels were yet to open at Yuksom. So we decided to take tea and breakfast on the way, preferably at Jorethang (2 hrs from Yuksom). After an hour or so, we were not able to control our hunger and stopped at one village. Break started with tea and ended with samosa and banana too! We dropped Shital and Bharati at Jorethang as they planned to visit Gangtok. Journey till Siliguri was then a mundane one.
We got dropped off at Kanchenjunga Youth Hostel. This time, we booked 2 AC rooms for us. After doing some experiments, we were able to turn on fhe ACs, thanks to Mi Note 4!! After freshening up, we went to Inox theatre at City center mall to enjoy the most happening movie - Bahubali. It was a fun posting this update on whatsapp group and getting notorious comments from the family members!

Afterwards we went to Haveli hotel for dinner, as it was tried and tasted and close to our hostel.

Siliguri

Instead of writing the new article, I am covering it here. Today we were leaving from Siliguri and travelling to Bagdogra to catch our flights to Delhi and then Pune. After the morning breakfast at the stadium hotel, Advait, Ishani, Babu and Samip left for airport. We 5 (MP, Mahesh, Suhas, Vinit & Viraj) had ample time as our flights wers at 3 pm. So we hired a 6 seater auto to roam around. We first visited the Iskon temple nearby and then Guru sweet mart to enjoy the misty doi (dahi) and roshogulla (rasagulla).

Misti Doi.... finished :)
After that we directly headed to the airport. Soon after we checked in our baggage, we came to know that the flight is delayed by an hour. This meant a very tight connection for our onward journey to Pune. I quickly contacted the GoAir office there and put the priority lable on our bags. This helped a lot as our bags were arrived on the belts at Delhi airport before us! Delhi-Pune flight was from Jet air and we had to catch the shuttle to reach terminal 3. After quick check-in, we joined Samip and Suhas at the lounge to enjoy the food!
We reached home by 12:30 in the night. There was a mix feeling at that time - happy to be back to home safely and little sad for missing the nature and the fun from the trek!

Stay tuned for future updates and trek planning.

Goech La Trek: Day 10

Day 10
Tuesday 9 May 2017
Tsoka (9685 ft) to Yuksom via Sachen
Distance travelled: 12.7 kms

Packed lunch ready to carry
Today was the last day of our trek. After the breakfast (umapa and pasta), we started from Tsoka at 7:55 am. We crossed Bhakim within an hour, and started further. (video) Another 1 hour of descent and we reached the iron bridge at Prek Chu river. We stopped here to take a bite of energy bar, had a chitchat with 2 groups heading towards Tsoka and resumed our journey.
View from the bridge (video)
Rain started pouring soon after crossing the bridge. Shital, Sheetal, Brahma and I were together now. We quickly put on the poncho. With every descent, we were getting more comfortable due to increase in oxygen levels. We were at Sachen campsite in next 30 minutes. Shital decided to wait here with Pratik for Brahma and Sheetal. It was only 10:30 in the clock, not a good time for lunch. Hence I started my walk towards Yuksom. This entire trail, I was again alone enjoying the beautiful nature around.
20 minutes before Yuksom, I took a break to take a bite from my lunch box.
After reaching the hotel

After reaching the hotel, I concluded the trek by first removing the shoes (and the ever stinking socks) before entering the room. My roomies (Atul, Vinit and Viraj) were already freshened up and it was my time now. What an awesome feeling of taking a bath (and changing clothes) after 9 days. I tried to finish by lunch, but the attempt was not completely successful. Internet connectivity helped us to contact more well-wishers!. Slowly one by one, the team members started joining us at the hotel.

After some rest, we decided to roam around the Yuksom town. The view of the small town in lush green mountains was awesome. We got a well trained guide in terms of Ishani. She suggested 2 options - visit the local market and Gupta's shop or visit the Dubdi Monastery.
We chose the later one and marched towards it. Samip and Suhas returned back saying thay are not interested in walking. (These gentlemen understood it very early). Initially it looked like an easy walk, but it took close to 40 mins to reach there. Dubdi Monastery is a very old one. After the visit and photography, we traced back our route to reach the hotel for a cup of tea. Some of us experienced the silent kiss from litches on the way.

@ Dubdi Monastery

Evening party was a lively one with the attraction called Tongba. Its a local drink made up of barly and other grains. Just pour the hot water and enjoy the drink. Feedback session was more interesting (and open) due to Tongba effect. Everyone shared their experiences and wished to do more Himalayan treks in future. We enjoyed Tashi's superb food one more time (or the last time in this trek). With all these beautiful memories, we went back to our rooms to catch up Mt. Kanchenjunga again in dreams!

My stats for the day:
Pulse: 77.  O2: 97.  Breathing rate: 15

Goech La Trek: Day 9

Day 9
Monday 8 May 2017
Thansing to Tsoka (9685 ft) via Kokachurang and Phedang
Distance travelled: 15.6 kms
All together
Today we planned to leave Thansing by 7:30. Weather was good and I decided to take photograph with our kitchen staff and trek leads. We had photography session with Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Pandim as backdrops. We started our return journey at 7:45 am. Thansing to Kokachurang was now a descent, however we took more than 1 hr due to frequent stops for photography.

Kokachurang - the haunted place !!
@ Phedang
The trail from Kokachurang to Phedang was a long walk through dense forest of rhododendrons. It was almost a flat walk without any height gain or loss. We got seperated in 3-4 groups in this journey. It was so pleasant walking in the lonely path and I chose the same to walk alone for some time. We reached Phedang at 12:30 pm and finished our pack lunch.

     The jungle walk photos

From Phedang, trail till Tsoka was steep descent again in the dense forest. We covered the same in 2 hours. Here too I chose to remain alone for majority of the time. At one point, air breeze was cool and birds were singing. I slept for 20-30 mins in this heavenly atmosphere.

At Tsoka, we had to change our earlier campsite as it was occupied by HMI participants. Everyone was too tired (or relaxed) since yesterday to do stretching after reaching the destination. Instead we all were busy searching for cellular network!
After connecting with our families, we were back to discussions about the mountains and the peaks we sighted. Everyone had different opinions about the peaks, hence we met the HMI instructor as well. However did not get any satisfying answer. We tried to check with Pratik, however he was too busy in reading to come out of the tent. Based on the consensus, we labeled the peaks finally (Which got changed after Tashi's clarification next morning!!!).
Our evening was very much beautiful. Tashi made a beautiful dinner. Everyone was eager to finish the dinner due to the next program. We all gave our introduction and then started our cultural activities, singing Nepali and Marathi songs. We thoroughly enjoyed this lively session.

At 10:30 pm (this was very late considering our earlier 7 days experience. Might be a sign of return to civilized world!!), we went to bed to get ready for last leg of our trek.

My stats for the day:
Pulse: 77.  O2: 97.  Breathing rate: 15 (good sign as coming back to normal at lower altitude)
