Goech La Trek: Day 1

Day 1
Date: Sunday 30 April, 2017

Actually our trek starts from tomorrow from Yuksom. However as per itinerary of TTH, day 1 is travel from NJP/Siliguri to Yuksom.
TTH arranged cars for us from NJP station at 9 am. As we all were together, we decided to start early i.e. 8 am and hence I called the cars to the stadium. Everybody got up early and freshened up. Few enthusiasts (like me) also took the shower!! Getting morning breakfast at 6:30-7 am was bit difficult. We had to walk close to 1 km to get the tea. One thing is clear.... Siliguri is not like Pune !!
Amit and others also tasted some digestive local drink as well.

Cheers !
And finally we got tea as well :)
Everyone was ready with their bags and once the cars arrived, we quickly loaded our bags and started from the hostel.

Get, set and Go !!!
Right now, we had only 2 cars and 3rd car was supposed to meet us on the way. At the outskirts of Siliguri, area called as Laddu Gopal, we took a hault for breakfast. Hotel Santa Banta was very neat, clean and quickly served the breakfast. I liked the tagline of it the most which says, ' If you are awake, we are open'! In the meantime, our 3rd car came and the bags were adjusted accordingly.

Our own ..... :) :)
Once we crossed Sevoke, the road till Yuksom was very scenic and awesome. It goes up and down on the hills with green forest on one side and you always have a valley on the other side. First we crossed the Coronation bridge on Tista river, which travellers use to travel to Bhutan. Then we crossed the Melli checkpost, entered in Sikkim and took the road to Jorerthang/Yuksom. Just before entering Jorethang, we took again a break for lunch at 16th Mile restaurant.
Apart from our group of 15, there were 2 additional participants, Bharti and Shital. I got a call from Shital that they have left Darjeeling and soon would be reaching Jorethang. She told me to expect a call once they reach. After finishing our lunch, we quickly started for Yuksom. I called Shital once, however not able to connect. We were 20-25 minutes (closely 20 kms) from Jorethang when I got a call from Shital saying there are no vehicles available for Yuksom and can we come back to pick them!! Situation was very much interesting.. our car was last one (with full capacity of 6), I tried dialling people from other cars but not succeeded. I even suggested our driver that Viraj and I will get down and he can go back for pick up. However our driver was not ready and convinced for that. Shital called me and said they got one car towards Yuksom side (but not to Yuksom) and asked me to stop on the way. I stopped one car with 4 members just before Legship. Remaining 2 cars went ahead and then stopped at one small hotel (Dashrath's hotel) for tea.

After some time, we saw the third car coming but no sign of Bharti and Shital. We almost waited for more than 30 minutes here and finally decided that 2 cars will go ahead and 1 will wait (since their pool car was available till Tashiding only). This is the very place where Vinit spotted his gorgeous friend first (and then kept spotting her over and over till the end of the trek)!!

After reaching Kanchenjunga hostel at Yuksom, we relaxed a bit then freshened up and went down for introduction, breefing followed by soup and dinner. Here we got introduced to Prateek, our trek leader from TTH. After the breefing, everyone looked little tensed with the fear of AMS!! One part of the brain was saying 'अब क्या होगा?' while the other part was saying 'All is Well'!!
We filled a short form for forest permit and submitted our documents too. Post a heavy (again!!) dinner, we went early to bed for an early start next day for the trek!!

Goech La trek: Day 0

After the long preparation of practice, packing etc, here is the much awaited day of the trek. Day 0 means leaving the home and reaching New Jalpaigudi (or Siliguri), popularly called as gateway of eastern India.
I got up at 2:30 am, freshened up and started from home at 3:10 am along with Viraj and Vinit to catch the Pune Delhi jet airlines flight.
Leaving home early in the morning
6 of us had same flight whereas 5 had indigo. Samip and I had Delhi Bagdora Jet airways flight again (booked through miles), whereas rest of the group had GoAir. Babu also joined the group at terminal 1, traveling from Bangalore. All the 12 had a stomuchful breakfast at the respective terminal lounges (मराठीमध्ये सांगायचे झाले तर, मस्त हादडून घेतले!!)

The trio in Jet Airways flight
Samip and I reached 1 hr earlier than others, took some rest and booked cab for us to reach Siliguri. I also met my friend, Sujata who was returning same time from her Sikkim trip. She gave me veg biryani to eat which she got from Kesari !! When everyone arrived from Delhi, we moved to our destination for the day, Kanchanjunga hostel located at Kanchanjunga stadium at Siliguri (which Vinit used to called as Khandar jokingly).
Kanchenjunga Youth Hostel, Kanchenjunga Stadium, Siliguri
We did book the dorm room for all of us. The room was pretty good as against the expectations. After settling down, we went outside for tea and snacks. After searching for few places, we settled down at Bombay AC restaurant. Whike returning to hostel, we took the other route which goes through Hongkong market and subji mandai.

Advait, Ishani and Suhas joined us later in the evening. We enjoyed our first oximeter and BP monitoring activity (which became our daily fun activity during the trek!!). As we had late and heavy lunch, initially everybody was reluctant for dinner. However at 7 PM, when we decided to go out, all were ready !! Viraj searched on Zomato and found out a descent hotel, Haveli, nearby. Team enjoyed the food there along with IPL match and returned back by 9:30 pm.

Bagpacking for Goech La trek

Once the trek is finalized, next task is purchasing the items and bagpacking. Bagpacking seems like easy, however its a very tedious and time consuming task. I am attaching the list for the things to carry for the trek.

Most of us purchased these items. Most of the trekking gears were bought at Decathlon, Pune and Everest trekking shop at Deccan, Pune. The latter one in operated and owned by Vishal Kaduskar, a Giripremi hiker. I had one bagpack for day use, and purchased one more from Paytm for keeping other heavy items. One can use duffle bag as well in place of it. Everybody had their own medical insurance, however that does not cover helicoptor rescue and any medical issues during adventurous sports liking hiking. Hence we had to go for an insurance which will cover these things. Vinit helped the group getting one from Bajaj Allianz at minimal cost of Rs 1000+ valid for a year.

One week before the trek, Viraj told that the temperature at Goech La is very low and we need to have a better jacket. We tried to get the down jacket from Decathlon, however it was not available there. Suddenly an idea struck in my mind and I contacted my sister Deepa, who is at Oslo. She showed me couple of jackets she has and I finalized the one shown below in picture (my mother is wearing it). One of her friend was traveling
next day to India, so she handed over it to her and I got it well in time. So in short, down jacket became mandatory and sweater optional !!

There are a large nos of tips available online. I used one of it, placing all the cloths rolled & tied and keeping all the material in a zip lock plastic bag. I got very good zip lock bags, courtesy Viraj. Placing them in those 2 bags is very easy, whatever required for day walk, keep it in day pack, everything else will go in large bag. Having said that, it is not so easy to match the volume vs weight configuration. I was able to balance both, however remembering where I kept what will always be  the challenge.

So after all the theory work was completed, I started packing process.
Step 1: Gather all the things at one place.
Step 2: Start rolling and rolling
Step 3: Keep similar stuff in same zip lock bag
Step 4: Keep heavy and bulky items in the bottom and light one on top
Step 5: Keep small items in front, side and top pouches.
That's it!!

Here are few photos of the packing.

Goech La Pass trek

Goech La pass trek: plan and update in a nutshell (3 Apr, 2017)

‌Finalizing the trek:
Last year, post Diwali, Vinit and I started discussion about next year trek to Nepal. He had already completed EBC ( Everest Base Camp). Viraj also showed interest to join us. So we looked for other opportunities and finalized ABC (Annapurna Base Camp) or Annapurna circuit trek. We also worked at customized trek which will have ABC and part of Annapurna circuit. As this is a customized trek, we need more people to join to make it affordable. When I floated this idea to our hiking community, half of them shied away whereas some said that they are not ready to spend 70-80k. Vinit and I then searched other possibilities (domestic only to reduce cost) and then thought to do Goech La pass trek, also known as Kanchanjunga Base Camp (KBC) of Indian land.

‌Finalizing the trekking group:
Though we zeroed down on low cost domestic trek, there was not much acceptance from our hiking group. So we 3 decided to go for it even if nobody is joining us. We searched within the trekking organizations in Pune, however found that none of them do Goech La pass trek. We searched external trekking organizations and found two, Indiahikes and Trek The Himalayas (TTH). We talked to our friends who had done treks earlier and heard good reviews about both the organizations. Both seems very much professional. We then had discussions with both these groups and finalized Trek TTH. Couple of factors which weighed TTH higher were:
- Cost is marginally lower than Indiahikes.
- Cost includes NJP to NJP whereas Indiahikes was ex-Yuksom
- TTH food is better and they also provide sweet during dinner. (This is what we heard, will confirm post trek ☺)
- Dates suitable as per our plan

‌Finalizing trek members
Initially, we were 3 (Vinit, Viraj and I) to start with. Vinit and I had a call with TTH to check if we can get group discount. TTH informed us that they provide 10% discount if the group size is 10 or more. We estimated the overall expenses and communicated to our hiking group. Slowly we started getting response, and we crossed the magical number of 10 in a week. We then confirmed our booking, selected the batch and assured the discount as well. We were not expecting, but very soon our batch was full. In fact, first batch of Goech la to be full. Interesting part is all 20 bookings were from our group only☺. (As we are approaching the trekking date, we witnessed couple of drop outs due to non availability as well as saw 2 new bookings. So somebody other than our group is also there!!). To get better price, we even booked our flight tickets by mid December. For that, we did search a lot and also used lots of discounts available (eg Yatra, MMT, HDFC, Paytm etc).

‌Practice sessions:
Goech La pass trek is at high altitude, last point being at 16000+ ft. We live at Pune which is at 1840 ft. Hence one need to do good practice to improve breathing capacity along with physical. TTH website also provided basic physical activities to remain fit. However we heard that those will not be sufficient. Practice sessions were different for everybody except the common treks. Viraj, Vinit and I (being in proximity) had same practice, which started by hiking Sinhgad from January 1st. Slowly we improved our timing to the Sinhgad as well as started carrying load. (You can find some specific details in my other blogs).
There was a small workshop from Giripremi institute on high altitude trekking. Some of us attended it and got some insightfull information.
We also did 2 endurance hikes. First we did in February to Rajmachi near Lonavala and second was Katraj to Sinhgad (popularly known as K2S) in March. After K2S, it was good to see everybody is fit and ready for the long trek in May. After K2S, everyone was eager to do it again. Hence we planned next K2S on 7th April.

‌Shopping:
Shopping is as equally important as the practice sessions. In fact, it is always advised to complete basic shopping before starting the pracice like the trek wears and shoes. Vinit and I had the shoes bought earlier (I had Quechua Forclaz Low 100, earlier known as 500, which I bought for my Amarnath yatra in 2016). Suggested similar shoes to others and they bought it either online or at decathlon. The other necessary items liking large backpack, hiking pole were ordered online, whereas few things like  sleeping liner, trouser, ankle support, buff etc were bought from decathlon or Everest shop. (This shop is recently opened at Apte Road, deccan by Vishal K from Giripremi).
Now only 4 weeks are remaining for our trek, so making a list to check if anything is remaining to buy. I will share the final list once completed !
About medical kit, suggested everyone to bring their own or pair with somebody. We will buy one Pulse oxymeter for the group, whereas Jaydev is carrying his BP meter.
We are also making our own t-shirt, which will be done very soon.

Getting the M shape

M is my initial in Mahesh. You would be wondering, we know that.. but whats this M shape all about.. right...???

During the practice session for Goech la trek, I planned the second K2S in April, however missed it. Then I decided that remaining 2 weekends, I will do 1.5 Sinhgad.
For the Sinhgad hike, we get a little bit of platue with 1 small hut and a temple on the way. Typically, we reach this point at half the time required for complete hike, (anytime between 25 to 30 minutes). So 1.5 Sinhgad means hiking the Sinhgad completely, then coming down till this mid point, again going up and then finally all the way down. Now if we plot the altitude on Y axis vs time on X axis, how it will look like? Exactly.. it will look like M ☺☺

So I tried to get shape M on Saturday 15 April. The figure looked as:

I was happy to see the shape. It also revealed that the mid point (by time is not same as by height). Anagha too said this is not perfect M. You need to come down further.

During the next weekend on Saturday 22 April, I came down further as decided. Now when I saw the graph, spontaneous aha came from me!! Finally it looked like a M shape !! I used Garmin vivoactive hr as well as Moov band to track it. You can see both the shapes below.

Elevation graph from MOOV (Not so accurate !!)

Garmin Vivoactive HR view (Last part is seen as truncated due to no battery!!)

Now, being achieved this, the next target is defined immediately.. doing 2x Sinhgad!!
Let's see when that happens !!
